The cookie jar shelf is one of the most copied corners of vintage kitchen pottery, and a good reproduction can look convincing under shop lighting. The reassuring part is that the copying process leaves physical traces no repaint can hide. A reproduction is usually cast from a mold taken off a genuine jar, and that single fact drives most of the tells below. Work through them in order and the recast pieces tend to separate themselves from the originals.
Fakes versus look-alikes
It helps to keep two terms apart before you start. A reproduction is a later copy of a jar a maker really produced. A fake is a jar carrying a mark for a piece that maker never made at all, the marked-up Little Red Riding Hood often cited with the McCoy name is the classic example, since Nelson McCoy never produced that shape. A look-alike is an honest period jar from a different pottery that simply resembles a sought-after one. The size and paint checks here catch reproductions; for marked fakes you also have to confirm the shape actually belongs in a maker's catalogue, which a reference book or collector society listing will tell you.
Why shrinkage is the strongest clue
Clay shrinks as it dries and shrinks again in the kiln. When someone takes a mold off a finished jar and casts a new one, that fresh copy passes through the same shrinkage a second time, so it comes out noticeably smaller than the piece it was copied from. Collectors who track this put the typical loss at roughly six percent, and on a tall figural jar that can read as close to an inch of lost height. That is why a tape measure is the single most useful tool you can carry to a sale.
The measurement only means something against a known figure. Collector society pages and the standard reference books publish heights for the shapes most often reproduced, so the routine is simple: measure the jar in front of you, then compare it to the documented dimension for that mold. A jar that lands a half inch or more short of the published height, with nothing else to explain it, has earned a hard second look.
Run the tells in order

- Heft the weightReproductions tend to feel lighter than an original of the same shape. Handle a known piece when you can so your hands learn the difference.

What the paint is telling you
Much of the color on these jars was cold-painted, applied over the fired glaze rather than under it, so it never fused to the body. On a genuine old jar that paint has had decades of washing and handling, and it wears away first exactly where fingers land, on raised faces, hands, and high points, while sitting duller than the glossy glaze around it. Reproductions and repaints get this backward. The color looks fresh and uniform, often with the same sheen as the glaze, and it has not thinned at the spots that should show the most wear. Even crazing across the glaze is a point for honest age, though it can be faked, so weigh it alongside the size and weight rather than on its own.
